Humana’s dental plans can be purchased along with a supplemental benefit plan. If you are in the market for both, Humana is a great company to consider as your shop for the best plan.

Humana is one of the largest medical insurance companies with an ever-expanding network of providers. It offers medical insurance, dental insurance and vision insurance for individuals and families. It also offers optional supplemental benefit plans (OSBs) to enhance Medicare coverage. Dental plans for seniors are available when you purchase certain Humana Medicare Advantage plans. In its drive to provide viable solutions, there are five basic dental plans and one that can be bundled with vision insurance.

Humana offers 50-65 year olds excellent individual dental plans that cover preventive care including cleanings, exams and X-rays at 100% with no deductibles and no waiting period. Benefits in its Loyalty Plan increase for the first three years. The annual maximum benefit also increases. Once you turn 65 and are eligible for Medicare, you can purchase supplemental medical insurance through Humana and add optional supplemental benefits (OSBs) that include dental and/or vision to some of those plans. These plans cover routine, basic and major dental procedures. All cover routine exams and cleanings at 100%, while basic and major dental procedures are partially covered.

It is important for seniors to continue to maintain their oral health as they age. Humana provides excellent dental coverage for routine care whether you are in excellent health or declining health. Its plans provide 100% coverage for routine exams, cleanings and X-rays. But as our general health declines, our oral health will also decline. It becomes critical to find an affordable way to maintain oral health, so dental problems do not become contributors to already declining health.

  • Humana Dental Insurance offers HMO and PPO plans for seniors 50-65. It also offers optional supplemental benefit (OSB) plans which can be added to Medicare supplemental plans you purchase from Humana.
  • It has an extraordinary network of dentists: 225,000 around the country.
  • Its website is quite comprehensive. Some sections provide information about ways to stay healthy and answer questions you may have about some common illnesses. The website links smoking to oral health and provides resources to help you quit smoking and give it up permanently.
  • You can reach Humana by telephone from 8:00 AM-8:00 PM Mon-Fri.
  • The company offers a mobile app that helps you track your claims and find providers in your area.
  • If you pay with automatic bank withdrawal or credit card, you save $2 on your monthly premium.

  • You can use any dentist but, if you choose an out-of-network dentist, your out-of-pocket costs will be higher.
  • You must sign up for a Medicare supplemental insurance plan through Humana to opt for a dental plan after 65.
  • Discounted services are only available from in-network dentists.
  • There is a non-refundable enrollment fee of $35 for some plans and $15 for others.

Bottom Line:

Humana is considered to be an excellent choice by many who compare providers. Its plans and pricing are competitive. However, you must enroll in one of its Medicare Advantage plans to enroll in a dental plan. If you already have a supplemental insurance plan, this company is not an option. But if you need a supplemental plan to cover costs not covered by Medicare, this is a great option. Humana has received several awards for its products and workplace recognition for its inclusive practices.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How quickly can I use this insurance and for what services? Services are accessible on the first day of the month after you have enrolled. Usually, there is no waiting period for preventive care, cleanings and x-rays. There is a 6-month waiting period for basic services (fillings, extractions, etc.). Major services (periodontal work, root canals) require a one-year waiting period.

How do I sign up? You can enroll on its website. Either request a quote by entering your zip code, or call its toll-free number to speak with a representative.

Can I keep my current dentist? Yes, Humana dental plans allow you to visit any dentist, including the one you currently visit. However, if you choose a dentist that is not in Humana’s extensive network of over 225,000 dentists, your out-of-pocket expenses will be higher.

I purchased the Total Dental Plan, which is a name that does not describe this insurance at all. I had dental surgery, root canal, tissue barrier, and bone graft. None of this was covered. When I called Humana asking why and what procedures are covered, I was told that mine weren't but that is why predetermination is done. (so that the company can tell you this after you have purchased the insurance.) Ten years ago we purchased Humana dental insurance and it paid for metal crowns, not white ceramic. No dentist did metal crowns. So, I feel scammed twice. Shame on me! How is it that Humana got so many stars, but the reviews I read were much like mine?

Humana Dental Insurance is the worst dental insurance I have ever had! Their coverage is very selective, their customer service is terrible, the website rarely works & forget getting any assistance with billing errors or website errors. I regret not reading reviews on this company before getting a policy!
