Seniors of any age may benefit from learning about their ancestral origins by using this service. MyHeritage DNA is an entirely web-based service, so it is ideal for seniors who are computer-savvy and do not have age-related vision issues which could prevent them from using the internet.

The simple DNA collection method makes this service a good option for seniors. However, seniors who are not computer literate and older seniors who have vision problems may require assistance signing up for the service, completing the genetic sampling and viewing the results.

The mission of MyHeritage DNA Family Tree is to help people discover their ethnic origins and connect with distant biological relatives. MyHeritage DNA does not offer health-related genetic results, so it does not confer much health-related value as a service. However, seniors who are seeking more information about their geographical ancestral roots may benefit from the service.

Seniors with advanced health problems, such as vision or cognitive issues due to a stroke or Alzheimer’s disease, may not be able to use the service as it is primarily web-based; these seniors may require assistance obtaining a test kit, completing the test and viewing results.

Pros:

  • At four weeks, the turnaround time for samples sent to the MyHeritage DNA lab is among the fastest for a genetic genealogical company.
  • MyHeritage DNA relies on a simple cheek swab rather than a messy and complicated saliva sample for the DNA sampling procedure. To provide DNA for the genetic test, individuals simply scrape their cheek with a swab, which is then placed in a vial, sealed and mailed back to the company for processing.
  • MyHeritage DNA enables users to sync their genetic results with family tree research.
  • MyHeritageDNA allows users who have used other DNA testing services to upload their raw genetic data to the website for free, and get free ethnicity reports and DNA matches.
  • Based on DNA analysis of 5,000 participants, MyHeritage recently updated their Ethnicity Estimate service to identify 42 distinct ethnicities, which means that it may have better resolution for the geographic location associated with some ethnicities than competitors do.

Cons:

  • No health insights are available with this service; MyHeritage DNA is only meant to help individuals discover their ancestral roots and locate relatives based on shared DNA.
  • Because MyHeritage DNA is so new to the genetic testing marketplace, it does not have many analytical tools for viewing one’s data.
  • MyHeritageDNA does not provide good matches based on shared DNA, due to its new and still-growing database of DNA and genealogical records.

Bottom Line:

MyHeritage DNA is a newer company that provides one basic DNA test for a flat, one-time rate. The services offered by the company enable the identification of ethnic groups and geographic regions of origin for a given individual, as well as the discovery of new relatives through shared DNA. The DNA test requires a cheek swab, a simpler and more convenient option than the typical saliva sample required by many other companies. Users who have previously used a different genetic testing website can also upload their raw DNA data to get analysis from MyHeritage DNA for free.

MyHeritage DNA is recognized in the Deloitte Fast 500 list as a Top10 Fastest Growing Company from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.Seniors may appreciate the fast turnaround time of MyHeritage DNA tests, which are up to two weeks faster than competitors. Seniors looking for a simple, low-cost and fast DNA test may wish to opt for MyHeritage DNA.

Product Details

Overview: MyHeritage DNA offers one standard package with a simple DNA test, to enable users to discover their ethnic ancestry and locate new relatives.

Package Details:

For $99, MyHeritage DNA offers a simple and standard DNA test; this is the only test option currently offered by MyHeritage DNA. The individual’s DNA is sequenced and analyzed using the Illumina OmniExpress-24 chip, with many hundreds of thousands of genetic marker tests strategically selected to reveal the greatest amount of genetic variation. In addition to providing genetic test results, the raw DNA data can be made available to the user and/or deleted at the user’s request at any time.

Ethnicity Estimates and DNA Matching are the two main features of the MyHeritage DNA test. DNA Matching enables the use of the individual’s DNA to help find relatives. The technology compares the individual’s DNA with the DNA of others in order to locate shared genetic sequences that could reveal a family relationship. The higher the percentage of shared DNA with another person, the closer the family relationship.

Ethnicity Estimation is the other main feature of the MyHeritage DNA test. The DNA test can reveal the user’s unique heritage, including ethnic groups and geographic regions that the user comes from. The user can also find new relatives through shared DNA.
