Wherever you live —a house, apartment, or condo —it’s important to have good homeowner’s insurance. This type of insurance provides financial protection for you when your home and its contents are damaged, or if someone is injured on your property. Not all policies are the same. You want to be sure that the package you buy does what it says it will do, and that claims aren’t a hassle. If you have special assets or valuables, you need to include coverage for these items in your policy.
AARP homeowner’s insurance is sold through The Hartford, and has been developed with great flexibility for members of the AARP.

No matter your age, it is important to insure your belongings and the home in which you live. The Hartford andthe AARP have developed a policy that can be modified to include additional coverages you may need. A possible addition is Assisted Living Care Coverage, which extends coverage to a relative in an assisted living care facility. This product is friendly to anyone who is looking for homeowner’s insurance.

However, if a senior has lost some mental acuity, it would be wise to have a relative help with the purchase. Although purchasing the policy is not difficult, the options can be confusing.

Homeowners insurance is always a great value, as long as you buy from a reliable company. Fixing even minor damage to your home can be costly, and you never know when you will need coverage. That’s why it’s a good idea to find and maintain a good policy that covers the value of your home and possessions. It’s also a good idea to review your policy on an annual basis to be sure it’s up to date.

Seniors in any state of health will find great value in a homeowner’s policy from AARP/The Hartford. You cannot underestimate the sense of comfort you will have with appropriate coverage for your home.

Bottom Line:

The Hartford began in 1810 as a fire insurance company, and has since continued to add products to its repertoire including auto and life insurance. The company has grown into a Fortune 500 company, and was ranked 153rd in June 2017. The Hartford is strong financially, and received an ‘A+’ rating from A.M. Best. Itbegan working with the AARP in 1984, so it has many years of experience working with seniors.

The Hartford’s basic product is similar to those offered by other insurance companies, but it offers two supplemental packages you can add to provide additional coverage that a senior may need. This is a strong company with years of experience. If you are in the market for homeowner’s insurance, it would be a mistake to skip over The Hartford insurance, which is endorsed by the AARP.

More Information:

Product Details

Overview:A standard homeowner’s policy through The Hartford’s AARP-endorsed program is similar to almost all other policies in the industry. The policy covers your dwelling and its contents, as well as personal liability and medical payments.

Package Details:The basic policy includes coverage for your dwelling, other structures (barn, garage, fence), personal property, loss of use, liability and medical payments. You will need to determine the amount of insurance that you need to purchase. Most insurance companies limit the value of your contents to between 50-75% of the value of the dwelling. If you need additional coverage, there are several other options. You can include Full Replacement Cost, which means the company will pay the full cost to rebuild your home if it is a total loss up to 125% of your coverage limits.

There are also two Advantage Packages: a Home Advantage Package and a Home Advantage Plus Package. The standard Home Advantage Package includes personal injury liability coverage (if you are charged with libel or slander), identity fraud expense coverage, and “new for old” protection, which pays the actual cost of something needing to be replaced, even if it’s old.

The Advantage Plus Package includes the coverages listed above, and adds a disappearing property deductible which reduces your deductible by $50 for every three years you don’t have a claim. This package also includes equipment protection, which covers appliance and system replacement and repair similar to a home warranty.

Other Services: Some other options available are blanket coverage to protect important belongings like dinnerware or artwork, water backup and sump pump overflow, and assisted living care coverage. Finally, customers get access to qualified fraud specialists through the company’s Identity Theft 911’s Resolution Center. The company also provides access to reliable home contractors, and assistance in determining the value of the contents of your home. For covered claims, it also offers emergency clean-up services when there has been damage to your property.

Additional Company Details

Contract Details:A policy from The Hartford should be purchased from a local representative of the company. The rate you pay will be locked in for 12 months. You may cancel at any time by contacting your local agent, or contacting the company directly.

Warranty: The Hartford will not drop you due to an accident. Also, if you are age 50 or older, once you are insured through this program for at least 60 days, you cannot be refused renewal as long as premiums are paid when due.

Accreditations:The Hartford is not Better Business Bureau accredited, but holds an A- rating with the BBB. In addition, the company has received several other awards, including the Ethisphere Award, which recognizes the world’s most ethical companies. The Hartford has received this award nine times. It has also been recognized as a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality, Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles, and a military friendly employer, among other accreditations.

Company Details: The Hartford has been in business for over 200 years. The company has learned what it means to be sustainable by “doing the right thing,” while adapting and reinventing itself continually to stay relevant. The Hartford began as a fire insurance company in 1810, employing its own fire department to protect its customers. Fifteen years later, the company wrote an insurance policy for Yale University.

In 1835, when a fire destroyed New York’s financial district, many insurance companies were walking away from claims. The then-president of The Hartford Fire Insurance, Eliphalet Terry, called a meeting of the directors. They all pledged to help the people and businesses of New York using their personal fortunes. This bolstered the economy, and increased confidence in The Hartford. In 1984, The Hartford began to provide auto and home insurance to members of the AARP.
