Select Home Warranty is a relatively new company to the industry, but it has already established itself as a great option for homeowners looking for basic coverage at an affordable price.

Owning a home is a big commitment, and part of that commitment ismaintainingyour home and its contents. Standard homeowner’s insurance covers losses due to fire, theft and liability, but there are some things that this kind of insurance doesn’t cover. For example, what do you do if your air conditioning system breaks down? You have to find someone who knows about air conditioning systems to service it. If it’s beyond repair, you will need to purchase a new one.

Home warranty companies offer plans that cover these kinds of situations in your home. Many cover standard appliances, as well as systems such as electrical and plumbing. Select Home Warranty offers three packages that cover appliances, systems or both. If you are in the market for a home warranty, you should consider Select Home Warranty.

Select Home Warranty is one of several companies that offer home warranties. Purchasing a warranty requires a complete understanding of the terms of the contract you sign. You must be clear-headed, read the contract carefully, and fully understand what is covered and what is not. If you are handy around your home, you might findthat a home warranty is not a great value. If you are not handy but have maintained your appliances and systems and kept accurate records for each, this could be a great option. However, for older seniors who may have lost some mental acuity, purchasing a contract is not advisable. The contracts are long, very specific, and could be confusing to someone who does not understand the terms.

For a senior who is in excellent or good health, purchasing a home warranty can be a great investment. If you can get around your home and make do without a cooktop or washing machine for a couple of days or longer, waiting for service won’t be too much of an inconvenience. However, for a senior who has developed a chronic disease or cannot easily find alternative ways to take care of themselves, a home warranty might be a waste of money.

The company reserves the right to determine what is or is not an emergency, so you are at their mercy if the A/C is not working… and an elderly person is especially susceptible to the heat. Purchasing a home warranty might be worth it if there is a family member that can assist the senior if the need arises.

  • Signing up is easy. You can apply online or by phone.
  • Select offers discounts for multipleyear coverage.
  • Select covers appliances and systems that are in good working orderand have been properly maintained at the time you sign your contract.
  • There is no need for a home inspection to sign up.
  • The company often offers plan discounts on its website.

  • There is a 30-day waiting period before you can request a repair, and all outstanding fees are due before you can receive service.
  • Your refrigerator is covered in the Bronze Care package, but you must pay extra to get service on a built-in ice maker.
  • The warranty will not cover items that havebeen previously repaired.
  • Non-payment of the deductible can result in suspension of your service.

Bottom Line:

Select Home Warranty is a relatively new company in the home warranty industry, but it has already established itself as a leader. Two of its plans provide minimal coverage to either appliances or systems, but its Platinum Care plan covers items on both listsas well as some additional items. Coverage for other items, such as a pool, can be included in your plan. If you need coverage for a large number of items in your home, this might be a great value.

The terms and conditions on the website clearly lay out the limitations of coverage. As with any home warranty company, it is important to read the contract carefully and completely understand what you are committing to. Compared to some other companies that provide home warranties,Select’ssimple plans are slightly cheaper, but cover fewer items.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I request service?

Once your contract is effective (usually after a 30 day wait), you can call anytime (24/7) or submit a request through the website.

Besides the plan price, are there additional out-of-pocket expenses?

You will need to pay a Trade Service Fee for each contractor of a different trade (plumber, electrician, etc.) who visits your home.

Does the company cover old appliances?

Yes. Select covers any appliance or system that has been properly maintained and is in working order at the time you purchase the plan. However, if your appliance has been previously repaired, Select will not cover it.
