IDShield is a good idea for individuals of any age given the prevalence of identity theft today. Because the service is primarily a monitoring service, it does not require much action from the user after subscribing. However, this identity monitoring subscription service, like others in this category, is primarily internet-based and does require seniors to read occasional notifications and alerts regarding their accounts. Seniors unfamiliar with computers or the internet may encounter difficulty using this service.

A senior’s health condition does not affect the value of the IDShield service unless it prohibits them from reading the identity monitoring reports or taking action on instances of identity theft. IDShield automatically reviews and checks sensitive personal information so, in general, no interaction by the subscriber is required. The service is primarily web-based, so seniors who have difficulty navigating the web due to health issues, e.g., cognitive or vision problems, will encounter difficulties using the services.

Pros:

  • IdentityForce offers a broad range of identity monitoring services and boasts Certified Protection Experts who are available 24/7 to provide identity restoration services. These experts file paperwork, place calls and do the work required to restore the subscriber’s identity.
  • Both available plans offer a smart Social Security Number (SSN) tracker: it alerts users if another name has been associated with their SSN, which could indicate fraud.
  • Both available plans include medical ID fraud protection, which helps review the user’s medical benefits statements to determine that nobody is fraudulently using their health insurance or Medicare/supplemental benefits.
  • IdentityForce has a convenient smartphone app, available for iPhone and Android that can deliver alerts straight to the subscriber’s phone to alert them of instances of unusual behavior in their accounts, plus other important information.
  • If a wallet is lost or stolen, IdentityForce’s Lost Wallet Assistance helps the subscriber cancel and replace credit, debit and ATM cards.

Cons:

  • IdentityForce is slightly more expensive than other identity theft protection services; however, it does include a broader range of valuable features in its plans than its competitors.
  • Credit monitoring is only included in the more expensive UltraSecure+Credit plan, whereas most other personal information monitoring services offer some basic credit monitoring in all of their plans.
  • Computer knowledge is required to use IdentityForce, e.g., to sign up for the service, use the app and receive notifications about suspected identity theft. Seniors who do not have familiarity with computers, do not use cell phone applications and do not navigate the internet will not be able to take full advantage of IdentityForce services.

Bottom Line:

IdentityForce provides web-based monitoring for fraud and identity theft. IdentityForce is relatively expensive but offers an app that delivers notifications regarding suspected identity theft, as well as a variety of services in both of its plans. These include a Social Security Number tracker, junk mail opt-out and medical ID fraud protection. IdentityForce also offers a 14-day free trial. IdentityForce has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Gold Award from the Golden Bridge Awards and the People’s Choice Stevie Award, both in 2017. For individuals willing to pay slightly more for a broader range of valuable services, IdentityForce could be a good option.
