While there are dozens of medical alert companies vying for the business of the ever-growing number of seniors wanting to ‘age in place,’ one that stands out for its rapid growth – both in size and reputation – is Medical Guardian.

Medical Guardian is a well-managed Philadelphia-based company that has distinguished itself from its competition through aggressive product innovation, an emphasis on Client Services and an investment in the quality of its employees. Founded in 2005 after its CEO watched his grandmother fall repeatedly and need help at home, today he describes his average clients as being “80 years old, having lived in the same house for 30-40 years and wanting to remain living there independently.”

Today that same company is a leading provider of Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS) to over 200,000 seniors and people with limited mobility.

Medical Guardian brings many advantages to seniors. They include:

  • Four basic configurations that give you full flexibility to use either a landline or a cellular network with a fixed system at home; or more flexible cellular units with a 2-part mobile device or an all-in-one wearable pendant. All but the all-in-one include one free water-resistant ‘wearable,’ with a help button either on a pendant or a wristband.
  • A few accessories you can add to further customize the system to your needs: a fall detection button, a wall-mounted button and a lockbox.
  • Family Guardian Monitoring App, an app-based tool that ‘connects’ you to family members, doctors and other authorized caregivers so they can monitor your activities from a distance using three or more safety sensors.
  • Instant location tracking with the GPS-enabled cellular network which cuts the time between needing help and getting help to a minimum.
  • No-cost cellular service through AT&T’s network in the three cellular options that means you are covered even when local telephone service might be down. (That’s not the case with the landline-based system.)
  • 24/7/365 access to top-notch emergency response operators who are US-based and highly trained.
  • Monthly rates are locked in for as long as you keep the same monthly package.
  • No contracts to sign beyond the first 90-day commitment.

Medical Guardian has specifically developed its four affordable system configurations to meet whatever circumstances seniors might find themselves in whether their range of activity is around the house or around the country. The goal is for them to ‘age in place’ with the greatest degree of independence. The company has kept its systems easy to learn and easy to use – and has developed an excellent Client Service team that is only surpassed by its outstanding monitoring system.

Medical Guardian does face a few drawbacks in what it offers to seniors:

  • No fall detection button available for two of their four options.
  • Limited medical add-ons to their system, and no pill reminder service.
  • A 90-day commitment; if the equipment is received within 90 days, any unused prepaid fees beyond the 90-day fees will be returned.
  • Aggressive marketing on its website, with countdown clocks and constant efforts to obtain your name, email, phone number, etc.
  • High replacement fees could be incurred unless all units of the system, including cradles and mobile devices, are returned at end of service.
  • Only annual pay plans merit a free lockbox, an extra month of service and free ground shipping.
  • Service will not be satisfactory for the units that require access to AT&T’s cellular network if the network is either not available or is spotty. This could also be a problem when you are traveling, although AT&T’s coverage is among the best.
  • Having to recharge the mobile devices used in the Mobile and Premium systems every night as they have no fixed, plugged-in base unit.

Bottom Line:

Each year, the review site Rankings.com works with industry experts to examine and rank products and services for various industries. In 2016 it selected Medical Guardian as the Best Medical Alert System, calling out its “highly-rated basic service features and reputation.” It also cited its monitoring centers for excellence.

We highly recommend Medical Guardian as a company in the industry that brings outstanding monitoring services to its clients, as well as offers products that leverage technology wherever it brings true value. It has become a leading provider of the Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS) industry.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the difference between the Mobile Guardian and the Premium Guardian option? Aren’t they both just mobile devices?
Although both are cellular systems with GPS tracking, Mobile Guardian is like the traditional 2-part system with a “base station” and a pendant or wrist button. The base station is simply portable and needs to be within 350 of you in order for your button-press to be picked up. It has a 24-hour battery charge on a 2-hour full charge cycle.  Premium Guardian uses today’s most advanced technology: it is a wearable transmitter with 2-way voice, all in one, and can include fall detection capability at an added cost. Its range is unlimited and it has a 36-hour battery charge on a 4-hour full charge cycle. Both of these systems can be used at home or anywhere in the U.S. that AT&T has cellular coverage.

With all the choices offered by Medical Guardian, what if I want to change my service after I sign up?
Medical Guardian knows your needs or wants may change over time, so it will make adjustments in fees and equipment to be sure you are comfortable with your system. You would call Client Services to arrange for service and equipment changes, as well as know how to return the equipment you are no longer using so you do not incur equipment costs. However, the price lock offered by Medical Guardian only holds as long as you keep the same service, so your fees would likely reflect the present price of the new service, whether it is higher or lower than what you had before.

Can I trust Medical Guardian’s emergency monitoring service?
A medical alert system is only as good as its monitoring service, and Medical Guardian’s emergency response service is considered among the best. It is ranked fastest in response time. Its U.S.-based call centers are certified by UL, by The Monitoring Association with a “5-Diamond” rating, FM and the Department of Defense. As its CEO said, "Our nationwide, UL-approved monitoring centers are staffed with medically trained personnel, and are never outsourced outside the United States." It uses translation services in order to assist Medical Guardian’s clients in over 200 languages.

Classic Guardian ($29.95/month, or $ 329.45/year)

The landline-based Classic system works best for someone who only needs protection within the house and a short distance outside of it. Just plug it into the landline telephone jack. This system has one of the greatest ranges available in the medical alert market: 1,300 feet from the base station. More than one person can use the same base station by adding more transmitter buttons (pendants or wrist buttons).

  • Base station with 32-hour backup battery
  •  2-way voice communication through the base station
  • Impressive 1,300-foot signal range between base station and help button
  • One water-resistant ‘wearable’ (help buttons on neck pendant or wrist band)
  • No fall detection button available

  • Up to four wall-mounted buttons can be added to the system

Home Guardian ($34.95 per month, or $384.45 per year)

The cellular Home system also works best for someone who does not have a landline and who remains primarily within the house or right outside of it, within a range of 600 feet from the base station. More than one person can use the same base station by adding more transmitter buttons (pendants or wrist buttons).

  • Base station with 30-hour backup battery

Mobile Guardian ($39.95 per month, or $439.45 per year)

The Mobile system uses a small mobile device the size of a deck of cards that you keep near you at all times, whether you are home or out and about, in town or across the country. Family Guardian (Activity Tracking) Service: With this activity monitoring service, caregivers can remain updated on the activity and inactivity of a loved one throughout the day and night. Safety sensors are placed throughout the home. Real-time alerts are sent throughout the day, using the Family Guardian Monitoring app, with reports covering the past 24 hours and past seven days available by email or smart phone.

Sensors can capture when the person becomes active in the morning, goes into the kitchen (to prepare food) and goes in or out of the main entrance to the house. They also advise when the home temperature is too hot or too cold. (Call for quote)

Optional Accessories : Wall-mounted button ($2/month): for bathing areas or areas in your house that are too far from the base station, also small enough to be carried in your hand easily; come with double-stick tape and wall-mount

Lockbox ($29.95, free with annual pay plan and at times offered as a promotion): to hold your house key securely where it is accessible to emergency responders who come to your aid when you cannot unlock your door
