GS does not disguise the fact that it is, first and foremost, a roadside assistance service focused on RVs. The company goes so far as to even provide certified RV technicians on staff and to boast that it is the nation’s largest RV-specific dispatch network. That said, GS still offers roadside automobile coverage, but in the platinum category with platinum pricing.

The roadside services are truly first class with unlimited towing, five service calls per year, family coverage, boat trailer coverage, motorcycle coverage and many other luxurious offerings such as trip interruption service (where dispatchers find you a place to stay while you wait for vehicular repairs). The price is obviously a concern for those watching their budgets, but the value is unequivocal for those venturing further afield.

GS assistance does not just stop at the side of the road. It offers Emergency Medical Referral Services for the stranded. Dispatchers go the extra mile, literally, by offering customers help with locating legal, medical and dental help when they are on the road. Technicians even help members replace lost prescriptions and will assist in making alternative travel arrangements when plans do not go according to, well, plan!

Trip Interruption Assistance is also available at an additional charge when rescue exceeds 24 hours as a result of a wreck. Reimbursements for meals, hotels and rental vehicles are good for up to $2,000 depending on the customer’s membership tier.

Pros:

  • GS has been a stalwart in the industry since 1984, having served over two million customers throughout North America.
  • There are three high-end roadside assistance options for customers with recreational vehicle needs.
  • Members receive unlimited mileage when in need of a tow, as well as lock-out servicing, emergency fluid delivery, battery jumpstarts and lost-key services.
  • GS boasts a network of some 40,000 independent technicians, as well as a staff of RV specialists to answer questions 24/7.
  • Members like you will get up to 30% off at Camping World, 10% off at brand name campgrounds, between $.05 and $.08 off per gallon of fuel, dump servicing discounts and coupons for LP gas, RV shows and RV trip planner services.

Cons:

  • The most obvious downfall is the price of membership, which ranges from $84.95 to $144.95/year.
  • GS offers a lot of discounts that could more than make up for the initial membership cost, but these may not prove useful if the member does not frequent such establishments as Flying J, AAMCO or GS Campgrounds.
  • GS ensures that all vehicles, be they leased, owned or borrowed, are covered; this could be excessive, however, since most new vehicles come with warranties and coverage as a part of the final asking price.

Bottom Line:

GS is the Cadillac (no pun intended) of roadside assistance services. It offers three premium, high-end automotive and trailer membership tiers that come with unlimited towable miles, battery jumps, emergency fluid deliveries and trip interruption services. GS has helped over two million members out of unpleasant situations and boasts an outstanding customer service center replete with RV technicians ready to answer your call. The company has been going strong since 1984 and provides a network of 40,000 independent mechanics throughout North America with further assistance, at a charge, in the US Virgin Islands and Mexico.

GS knows that its many services might not be for everyone. Therefore, the company makes cancellation easy, even offering a money-back guarantee if membership is cancelled within the first 30 days of use. GS is best for the traveler with an older rig who is venturing very far from home and who may want the reassurances of a team, ready at the drop of a hat, to provide emergency medical referral service or to point the stranded in the direction of the nearest accommodations while they await repairs on their trailer, truck or car.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What if I move? Am I still covered?

Members are covered anywhere in the United States and Canada. Be advised, however, that GS does not offer automatic renewal, which may negatively impact coverage if you forget to update your address and rely on updates via mail. That said, if you move, then give the company a call just to be on the safe side.

If I am a commercial driver, am I still covered?

Members are covered in self-contained motorhomes, fifth wheels, travel trailers, toy haulers, pop-up camping trailers, cars, vans, trucks, SUVs, boat trailers and motorcycles only.

What if my vehicle is stuck in mud, snow or worse?

Members are cautioned that they should try to park, if at all possible, on private property or a cement pad rated for a large RV. That said, GS will cover up to two hours of winching services.

More Information:

Product Details

Overview: While GS offers a platinum automotive coverage plan, the company is more well-known for its RV roadside packages. All three plans offer unlimited towing miles, jumpstarts and five service calls. The Platinum Auto plan also gets you access to the 40,000 independent service providers and discounts at AAMCO. The RV plans, however, include more than just motorhomes, with coverage extending to autos, motorcycles and boat trailers. Spouses and children are covered as well, and the plan comes with the RV mobile mechanic dispatch service previously mentioned.

Package Details: The RV plans come in two categories: Standard and Platinum. Both offer members flat tire repair servicing, tire delivery, battery jumpstarts, emergency fluid deliveries and emergency medical referral services. The latter, however, includes multiple RV coverage, SUV trailer coverage, assistance with rented vehicles, $1,500 in roadside services in Mexico, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, Home Locksmith Services, hotel discounts and rental car discounts.

Add-on Services:  The highest tiered RV plan also comes with RV technician assistance in the event you simply have a question about your rig. Additionally, Concierge Services are available for recommendations regarding RV repair locations, service and parts facilities, fuel locations, dump stations and restaurants, lodging, campgrounds and parks. Discounts of up to 25% are also available at Avis and Budget, with up to 20% off at Days Inn, Howard Johnson, Travelodge, Knights Inn and more.

Additional Company Details

Contract Details:  Membership plans are good for one year, but are very simple to upgrade or cancel if you find that you no longer need services. GS recommends you simply stop paying for the annual membership, since there is no automated charge, which is a plus for busy seniors! You can also call customer service to cancel. If done within the first 30 days, you will receive a full refund less any claims paid. If you find yourself outside of that grace period, then you get a pro-rated refund for all the remaining months less a $50 cancellation fee.

Warranty: GS maintains that members will receive some form of assistance in between 45 minutes and one hour. GS does not guarantee specific response times, but will accommodate the stranded through the RV Concierge service or Trip Interruption service. As an aside, GS also offers a money-back guarantee in the event a member cancels their plan within the first 30 days.

Accreditations: GS is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has received an A+ rating.

Company Details: GS was founded in 1984, but has history dating back to the 1930s. The company was born of a grouping that offered subscription services for, among other things, Camping World, travel publications, banking and RV-related products. Thus, GS is not only a company heavily invested in roadside assistance, but all activities associated with camping, motorhome touring and recreational outfitting.
