When a senior has a medical alert system, they can simply press the alert button and a trained professional can speak to the senior over a two-way speaker to assess the nature of the emergency and dispatch help accordingly. The senior’s panic device can also be programmed to dispatch the police or fire department immediately.

Population Density

Over 600,000 seniors over the age of 65 live in Kentucky. Nearly 12 percent of that population lives in poverty—one of the highest rates in the nation. The Kentucky Department of Aging and Independent Living strives to reduce the significant poverty levels in the state. Furthermore, Kentucky’s population is projected to increase to 4.6 million by 2020, and will practically exceed five million a decade later. By 2050, it is anticipated that Kentucky will have a population of 5.3 million.

With experience and steady improvement of its resources, Kentucky’s goal is to significantly improve its emergency response times. 

Medical Care in Kentucky

America’s Health Ranking ranked Kentucky as one of the worst states to receive medical care in the nation. The medical care rating consisted of evaluating the services provided, competency of the medical professionals, treatment and preventive measures. In 2014, the state ranked as the 47th healthiest state in the nation. 

One of the most significant challenges for this state is the ability to ensure accessibility and affordability for residents. In Kentucky, nearly one in three people receive coverage through Medicaid, however, only 22 percent of adults aged 65 and older report having a primary care physician or healthcare provider

Senior Health Rating in Alabama

The 2017 America’s Health Rankings Report provided a comprehensive analysis of the senior health population on a national and state-by-state basis. The study compared 34 areas of senior health. The study also ranked each state across 26 measures of health determinants and health outcomes. While there were many states that were declared “healthy,” Kentucky ranked 49th as one of the least-healthy states.

Other State Considerations

Studies have found that Kentucky ranks as one of the unhealthiest states in the nation.
