Medical alert systems were designed to provide a means for seniors to obtain medical help in the event of an emergency. The medical alert systems are small and can be placed within the home, connecting to an emergency monitoring center at the press of a button. When the button is pressed, a trained agent will summon the appropriate first responders.
Medical alert systems often provide quicker response times than calling 911 the traditional way by phone. Additionally, the reliable equipment helps to keep seniors connected and safely independent within their homes. There are a variety of features that can be added to a system, allowing it to be personalized for each senior’s specific needs.
Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina, and has an estimated population of 438,000. The state ranks as the 42nd most populous state in the country. Medical alerts can provide a great option to allow seniors to maximize their opportunities for comfort, independence, security, safety and well-being.
The city of Raleigh has worked diligently to improve its 911 dispatch and emergency response times. The EMS response times have also decreased from an average of 10 minutes and 46 seconds to 9 minutes 45 seconds. The department contributes its 911 dispatch success to an increased staff, new training and process improvements. Officials also reported that the improved EMS response times are contributed to by providing additional ambulances, adding additional staff, and co-locating ambulances with local fire departments, in an effort to dispatch the closest ambulance to the call.

Several medical facilities, including WakeMed and UNC Hospitals, received low grades. UNC Rex Healthcare received the highest possible ratings. The study compared nearly 60 performance and safety measures. The study also included broader areas, such as: patient experience, safety of care, readmission and the effectiveness and timeliness of care. UNC Rex Healthcare is one of 10 hospitals in North Carolina, and nearly 400 nationwide, that received a top rating. Three facilities in North Carolina received the lowest possible scores, however, none were in Raleigh.
Many forms of chronic memory impairment, such as Alzheimer’s, have had a huge impact on seniors in Raleigh. Impairments of the cognitive functions, such as speech, problem solving, memory and judgment, are often affected in these cases. Such impairments can make it difficult for seniors to function independently. Fortunately, medical alert systems can be customized to fit any senior’s specific needs.

In 2018, Raleigh was ranked as one of the most desired places for seniors to retire. This ranking took into account key factors, such as crime rates, weather, housing costs and access to amenities such as: doctors, restaurants, exercise facilities and golf courses. Medical alert systems can aid in allowing seniors to maintain their independence as they enjoy their retirement years. The systems are generally low cost, easy to set up and provide the peace of mind needed to live securely.
